Home Care Instructions
for Your Pet's Spay or Neuter
The continuing recovery of your pet is now in your hands. Please
follow the directions outlined below. This will contribute to recovery and
reduce convalescent time. If you have any questions, please feel free to call
us.
Medications
Your pet may have been given an injection of a long-acting antibiotic. This
is to help reduce infection caused by licking and/or housing (environment).
Exercise
Your pet will probably still be drowsy from the anesthetic when you pick him/her
up. Confine your pet to one level of the house or in a run. For the first
day, allow out only for eliminations. Keep on a leash or under close control
at all time for 3 to 4 days (no running or jumping). Allow gradually increasing
amounts of exercise after 3 days.
Incision
Watch incision daily for swelling, redness or drainage. It is not uncommon
to have a small amount of drainage within the first 24 hours. Do not let your
pet lick or chew at the incision site. This can damage the sutures and also
it may become infected. Please use an Elizabethan collar (or similar) to prevent
licking.
Stitches are removed in 10-14 days. You can do this yourself by using a small pair of scissors and cutting one strand of suture below the knot. Simply pull out. There is no charge if you wish us to do this.
Diet
Withhold food overnight You may give him/her a small amount of water later
in the evening. Feed as usual the next morning following surgery.
Cat Spays
Follow the instructions above. Cats tend to self-restrict their exercise.
Keep indoors for the first 3 days.
Cat Neuter
There is no suture removal required. Everything will dissolve on it's own.
If your pet becomes lethargic and loses its appetite, it may be a sign of infection. Please call the clinic at (867) 633-6137 24 hours a day for further instructions.
